God is the Supreme Being, unique among all beings.  It is profitable for Christians to ponder those attributes of God that He has graciously disclosed so that we may better know Him and more accurately describe Him to non-believers.  In these affirmations you will find a brief summary of the principle attributes of God:

  1. God is a spirit being (supernatural).
  2. Denial of the supernatural goes hand in hand with denial of God.
  3. Many of God’s attributes and purposes are beyond human comprehension.
  4. God is one in essence (there is only one God), but three in person.
  5. The three persons of God are called the Holy Trinity.
  6. God is sometimes referred to as the Triune God.
  7. The three persons of God (called the Godhead) are:  Father (the first person, our heavenly Father), Son (the second person, Jesus) and the Holy Spirit (the third person, also known as the Holy Ghost).
  8. The Trinity may be thought of as one entity (God) playing three distinct roles.
  9. The Trinity is not a contradiction, but it is a paradox.
  10. A paradox is something that appears to be a contradiction, but which, upon close examination, is not a genuine contradiction.
  11. The law of non-contradiction (simplified) states that something cannot be and not be at the same time.
  12. At first glance, the doctrine of the Trinity appears to say that God is one god and three gods at the same time, which would be a violation of the law of non-contradiction.
  13. Because an entity is not the same thing as a person, the Trinity does not violate the law of non-contradiction.
  14. The concept of a single being comprised of more than one person is foreign to our thinking.
  15. The Trinity is a mystery beyond human understanding.
  16. The second person of the Trinity, Jesus, is one person with two natures.
  17. Jesus has a human nature and a divine nature.
  18. Jesus is fully man and fully God at the same time.
  19. The dual nature of Jesus is unique and beyond our understanding.
  20. The dual nature of Jesus is paradoxical, but it does not contradict any law of reason.
  21. The dual nature of Jesus does not contradict any law of reason because a person is not the same thing as a nature.
  22. Christ is Jesus’ title, not his name.
  23. Jesus’ full name is Jesus bar Joseph or Jesus of Nazareth.  He may also be referred to as Jesus, Jesus the Christ, Christ Jesus, Jesus Christ or simply Christ.
  24. There are many, many other titles for Jesus in the New Testament.  Among the most frequently used titles for Jesus is Son of Man.
  25. God is unique and has no counterpart to which He can be compared.
  26. God has the power of being within Himself.
  27. God was not created.
  28. The law of cause and effect states that for every effect, there must be an antecedent cause.
  29. God’s uncreated, non-contingent existence is not a violation of the law of cause and effect because God is not an effect.  This point is critical to a proper understanding of origins.
  30. God is eternal (without beginning or end).
  31. God is omnipotent (all-powerful).
  32. God is omnipresent (everywhere simultaneously).
  33. God is omniscient (all-knowing).
  34. God is holy (perfect in all things; perfect in morals and ethics; without sin or flaw of any kind).
  35. God is sovereign (dependent upon nothing; in command of all creatures, things and events).
  36. God is immutable (God never changes).
  37. God is righteous (God always does that which is right).
  38. God is just (God leaves no sin unpunished, yet nobody ever suffers injustice at the hand of God).
  39. God is merciful (God showers unearned and undeserved blessings upon men).
  40. God is good (incapable of doing evil or committing sin).
  41. God is self-existent (having the power of being within himself; God is not created or derived).
  42. God is patient; slow to anger, yet He can be provoked to great wrath.
  43. God is loving (God love’s his creation and his creatures).
  44. God is wise (God does not make poor decisions).
  45. God is above all other beings (God has no peer or superior).
  46. God is the first cause, the creator of all things.
  47. Before there was any material thing, there was God.
  48. Nothing comes to pass unless God allows it.
  49. God hates sin (there is no sin in heaven).
  50. God hates all sins, including the ones we consider to be minor.
  51. God commands obedience (compliance with his laws).
  52. God reveals some of his purposes to mankind but keeps others secret.
  53. God graciously granted man free will upon Creation.
  54. God permits men to exercise their free will by violating his laws (sinning).
  55. God has established a penalty for sin, which is death.
  56. God sometimes chooses to intervene in the affairs of men.
  57. When God intervenes in the affairs of men, He does so without abrogating the free will that He gave them.
  58. Paradoxically, God sometimes uses the evil acts of men to bring about His good objectives.
  59. God’s purposes are often beyond human understanding.
  60. God is not the author of evil (sin), but He did allow evil to enter his creation.
  61. We can only speculate about why God allowed evil to enter the world or why He allows it to exist today.
  62. God will not allow the earth as we know it to continue forever.
  63. God will one day destroy the earth as we now know it and make a new earth free of evil.
