* Photograph, April 18, 2025. This is a photograph I took of pages 30-31 of the book, Early Man, by F. Clark Howell. Time-Life Books, N.Y, published this book, probably during the early 1970s. It was copyrighted 1968, 1970. The author was an American anthropologist. The Library of Congress card number is 68-27613. This book was called the Young Readers Edition, part of a popular series of books published by Time-Life especially for children and young adults.
This particular title was very widely read and made a deep impression on many youngsters. The photograph shows an illustration, an artist’s conception, of what the book calls, “creatures that led to modern man.” I believe it is part of a very well known illustration called, “The March Of Progress.” This iconic illustration shows that the evolution from monkey to man was clearly implied, even if not specifically stated. What impressionable young reader could come away with any other conclusion?
The theory of evolution directly contradicts what the Bible says about how the heaven and the earth came to be. It denies God’s account of how He created man and the animals over which He gave man dominion. It claims that animal extinctions occurred millions of years before the arrival of man, explicitly contradicting God’s declaration that death is the consequence of man’s sin. Evolution, if you believe it, pulls the rug right out from under Christianity.
Evolution rests squarely upon two more contradictions of the biblical record, namely that the earth is billions of years old instead of thousands and that the great flood of Noah never took place. It also lays the groundwork for more unbiblical beliefs, such as the certainty of extra-terrestrial life.
Evolutionary theory permeates modern thought and has been drilled into the heads of young people for decades. It is a major obstacle to belief in God, His Bible and, consequently, to salvation itself. For these reasons, Christians everywhere should take the challenge of evolution seriously (see the essay, “Evolution Versus Creation Science,” and the affirmations, “Creation By Chance,” also in this blog). Here are some basic affirmations concerning the theory of evolution:
- The theory of evolution is an attempt to explain the development of higher life forms without a creator God.
- The theory of evolution is part of an effort to explain God away.
- Although it is still called a theory, the theory of evolution has been taught in government schools as fact for more than 100 years.
- The theory of evolution (simplified) holds that over time, simple forms of life give rise unaided to more complex forms of life.
- Nothing, living or inanimate, has ever changed from a lower form to a higher form all by itself.
- Genuine mutations are universally degenerative. Their effects are always negative, never positive.
- Adaptation and variation within an animal kind are common.
- Adaptation and variation within an animal kind do not constitute evolution.
- Adaptation and variation do not produce new animal kinds.
- Adaptation and variation among human beings are common.
- The evolutionist phrase, “natural selection,” implies something that is not true.
- To select is to consciously and deliberately choose among alternatives.
- The power to select requires intelligence, conscious thought and decision-making.
- Nature is not conscious. It does not think and lacks the power to select or to choose.
- The theory of evolution explains the origin of things by purely natural processes, but it attributes powers to natural processes that they do not have.
- Scientists deny the existence of the supernatural God by substituting forces of nature He himself created and claiming that those forces perform things they cannot.
- The theory of evolution has been elevated to the status of a religion.
- Anyone who questions the theory of evolution is treated like a heretic or an idiot.
- The theory of evolution flies in the face of observable facts.
- Real, verifiable evidence proving the theory of evolution does not exist.
- Until recent times, schools taught that men evolved linearly from monkeys.
- Schools did not explain why, if monkeys evolved into humans, monkeys still existed.
- If some monkeys evolved into human beings while others did not, science did not explained why.
- Scientists now claim men share a common “ape-like” ancestor with monkeys, but that mankind branched off and evolved separately from monkeys.
- If higher forms of life had evolved from lower ones, there would be some fossil record of intermediate forms.
- There are no genuine intermediate forms in the fossil record.
- Belief in evolution is illogical and irrational.
- It is a huge leap of faith to believe in the theory of evolution.
- It is ironic that some men find it easy to believe in evolution, but hard to believe in God.
