This passage reminds us of our human limitations. Although we are not in control of many things, we try to be. And man often tries to find satisfaction and happiness in being in control.
The author of Ecclesiastes first reminds us of many things of which we are not in control:
- Time, 6
- Our future, 7
- Nature, 8a
- Death, 8b
- Certain circumstances in life, 8c
- Release from consequences from folly/wickedness (for those bound to it), 8d
- Human/governing authorities, 9-11
- What happens to the good and bad, 12a, 14
What we can control:
- Our Response to circumstances and seasons of life
- Rest in God's timing and will
- Learn what you can from each season that comes
- Seek the truth of Scripture
- Learn more of God
- Our Fear of God, 12
- Enjoyment of the Life that God has Given You, 15
